IP and Commercialization

On a regular basis, AllerGen investigators conduct cutting-edge research bringing innovation into society in the areas of allergic disease and asthma. These innovations translate into advancements in the study of gene-environment interactions, the development of novel diagnosis and therapeutics, and ultimately into the development of evidence-based public health policies related to allergic disease management.

The process of moving a technology from the lab to the market to bring economic benefits is called commercialization. AllerGen follows best business practices and processes to identify, protect and commercialize these emerging technologies.

Copyrights and Patents in Canada

The Canadian Intellectual Property Office (CIPO) is an agency of Industry Canada responsible for intellectual property (IP) rights including trademarks, copyrights, industrial designs, and integrated circuit topographies. A Guide to Copyrights is available in electronic form on CIPO website at www.cipo.ic.gc.ca/copyrights. A guide to Patents is available at www.cipo.ic.gc.ca/patents.

Most Canadian post-secondary institutions have established academic-industry liaison offices that facilitate the exchange of knowledge and transfer of technology between academia, affiliated research organizations, industry and the broader community. University-industry liaison offices facilitate collaborative research with industry partners and support the dissemination of research results through commercialization, while helping investigators to evaluate and protect intellectual property, licensing technologies and supporting the commercialization of inventions through a spin-off company. Academic-industry liaison offices will draft the necessary legal agreements and licences, negotiate licensing terms where necessary, monitor compliance by licensees, administer and distribute revenue and conduct further marketing and promotion as appropriate. The following hyperlinks contain the web addresses of Canadian University-industry liaison offices.
