Our host, McMaster University

Through its continued dedication to innovative education and ground-breaking research, McMaster University has earned its reputation as one of the leading post-secondary institutions in Canada.

McMaster's medical school was the beneficiary of the largest single cash gift in Canadian history from entrepreneur and philanthropist Michael G. DeGroote. The $105-million donation will be divided between a $64-million endowment fund, supporting education, health care and medical research in perpetuity, and a $41-million capital fund directed to construction and outfitting of laboratories and hospital units.

AllerGen's administrative offices are located in the Michael G. DeGroote Centre for Learning and Discovery.

McMaster's health sciences research spans the spectrum from curiosity-driven basic science in the laboratory to clinical research at the bedside and in the community. In its continual quest for excellence in research, McMaster has made some remarkable achievements. Consider:

  • McMaster was ranked as Canada's Research University of the Year 2004 by Research Infosource Inc.
  • McMaster is one of five Canadian universities ranked among the top 10 places to work in international academia by The Scientist magazine.
  • In 2003-2004, Faculty of Health Sciences investigators oversaw more than $108 million in research funding.
  • McMaster University currently boasts 63 Canada Research Chairs.
